 • The lacrosse is a sport that originated between legend and reality, between the tribes of Native Americans who lived on the coast north-east, in the Great Lakes.For them, 'Baggataway' (as it was called lacrosse) went beyond simple sporting activities, as was a religious ritual.The natives, in fact, played for the benevolence of the Creator, which asked to treat warrior sick or grow strong and virile men.The game also served to resolve conflicts between tribes, or to prepare for war.The legend tells of teams composed of more than a thousand players, playing fields almost fifteen miles long and lots of long days. • In 1636 Jean de Brebeuf, a Jesuit missionary, documented a game along Lake Ontario.Brebeuf parlò di "gioco del diavolo”. .Brebeuf spoke of "playing devil." At that time the Baggataway was practised by at least 48 tribes scattered on the territories of those who today are the north-eastern states of the USA and southern Canada.  • The French pioneers began to practice lacrosse around 1800.The Canadian dentist W.George Beers gave the game, in 1867, the first "modern" rules. • In 1877 New York University founded the first team, followed by other institutes. Today, in the USA, there are teams of lacrosse in about 400 colleges and 1200 high schools. • In 1908 and 1912 the lacrosse has been an Olympic sport.He participated in the Olympics as demonstration sports, including in 1948 and 1984. • The International Federation of lacrosse (ILF) was founded in 1974.And 'composed of 14 members (including a representative of the Indians of America) and 6 nations affiliate, in 1995 was also founded the European federation (ELF). • The first World Championship was held in Melbourne in 1974 • Today, lacrosse is practised in more than 48 countries.
